The Canton Public Safety Department has launched a new registration program for vulnerable or impaired individuals, known as the Vulnerable or Impaired Person (VIP) Registration. This initiative allows parents, legal guardians, or those with power of attorney to voluntarily submit fingerprints and photographs of individuals with special needs. The information is stored in a State of Michigan database to help identify and return these individuals if they become lost or unable to identify themselves.

The process uses Live Scan technology, which electronically captures fingerprints on a glass screen. In addition to fingerprints, the system also records a photograph of the VIP. The collected data includes the home address and contact details for parents or guardians.

According to officials, once someone is enrolled in the VIP program, law enforcement officers can use either a Live Scan device or a mobile fingerprint scanner to access their identifying information. This enables officers to quickly return the individual to their home environment while respecting their dignity.

Enrollment in the VIP program is available by appointment only from Monday through Thursday between 8 am and 5 pm. Appointments can be made by contacting the Canton Public Safety Records Bureau at 734/394-5410. Participants are required to bring a completed registration form, which can be found on the Forms page.

More information about additional registration locations and details about the program are available at https://www.michigan.gov/msp/services/vip.
