Wayne State University fencing athlete Mahmoud Elsayed participated in the Westend Epee Grand Prix in Budapest, Hungary, on March 15-16. Elsayed, a freshman from Tanta, Gharbia, Egypt, and a student at El Nasr Official Language School, competed in the senior event hosted by the Hungarian Fencing Federation.

During pool play, Elsayed achieved a perfect 6-0 bout record with a +16 touch differential. Despite being seeded fifth initially, he entered the direct elimination stage as the No. 21 seed due to 16 exemptions in the round of 64.

In his first-round match against Segeon Ma of Korea, ranked No. 44, Elsayed narrowly lost with a score of 14-13. He finished in 35th place out of 391 competitors. Ma progressed to the semifinals but was defeated by Masaru Yamada, who went on to win the championship.

Looking ahead, Elsayed will join four other Wayne State University student-athletes at the NCAA Championships from March 20 to March 23. The event will take place at the Multi-Sport Facility on Penn State University’s campus in University Park, Pennsylvania.
