The Wayne State University women’s basketball team achieved a 98-61 victory over Lake Superior State University in Detroit. This win brings Wayne State’s record to 21-6 overall and 16-3 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The game was held at home, where the team regularly competes in Detroit, Michigan, as noted on the official website.
Graduate student forward Gabi Lutchka and senior forward Taylor Thompson both reached a career milestone by surpassing 1,000 points scored for Wayne State. Lutchka reached her mark with a buzzer-beating jumper at the end of the second quarter, while Thompson joined her during a scoring run in the third quarter.
Wayne State started strong with an early lead, ending the first quarter ahead 26-21. The Warriors extended their advantage to 34-21 early in the second quarter before Lake Superior State closed the gap to two points. A late surge put Wayne State up by eight at halftime.
In the third quarter, Lake Superior State narrowed the margin to six points, but Wayne State responded with a decisive 15-point run. The Warriors maintained control through the fourth quarter, opening with a 22-2 run and securing a final score of 98-61.
Lutchka led all scorers with 20 points and five assists. McKenna Ferguson contributed 19 points and four steals. Jaci Tubergen set a career high with 17 points and four assists. Thompson recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
For Lake Superior State, Clare Conzelmann led her team with 15 points. Lara Aguzzi added 11 points, while Dara Capaldi had five rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Wayne State shot over fifty-three percent from the field and nearly doubled Lake Superior State in rebounds, collecting 49 to their opponent’s 28.
Wayne State Warriors Women’s Basketball has participated in NCAA tournaments and earned GLIAC division titles such as the North Division in 2012-13 and South Division in 2014-15 according to their official website. The program competes in intercollegiate athletics as part of its ongoing history.
The team’s next game will be at home against Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, February 28. Six student-athletes will be recognized before tip-off for Senior Day festivities.
