Wayne State University has launched a program that will cover the cost of tuition for local Detroit students eligible for admission at the university regardless of their household income levels.
The Heart of the City program is slated to officially kick off in 2020.
“The Heart of Detroit Tuition Pledge will provide free tuition for eligible students who either live in Detroit or graduate from a high school within the city,” the school posted on its website. “The initiative will potentially benefit the more than 49,000 students currently enrolled in Detroit high schools, plus thousands of city residents who are currently attending high school outside of Detroit.”

Those entering the program will receive free tuition and fees for four years. Over that time, the students will also be eligible to receive other university-sponsored scholarships to help address other needs.
“These scholarships not only represent a generous offer to Detroit residents but also reflect healthy revenues at the university,” Mackinac Center Director of Education Ben DeGrow told the The Center Square. “To help ensure the most effective use of these dollars, they should be tied to a student making demonstrable progress toward completing a degree.”
