Wayne State University issued the following announcement on April 10.

The Wayne State University Physician Group, in partnership with Wayne State University Health Sciences and ACCESS, is moving its drive-through COVID-19 testing for symptomatic health care workers and first responders to the former State Fairgrounds to join forces with the City of Detroit in its efforts to test residents for the virus.

Beginning Monday, April 13, WSUPG will staff two lanes at the city’s fairgrounds testing site. WSUPG will also partner with the city to provide testing prescriptions via telehealth for those seeking COVID-19 testing at the fairgrounds, where prescriptions are required for testing.

Since March 20, more than 2,900 symptomatic health care workers, police officers, firefighters and EMS/EMTs have been tested by clinicians and professionals from WSUPG, WSU’s Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Social Work, and College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and ACCESS, along with scores of volunteers at drive-through testing locations at WSUPG headquarters in Detroit and the ACCESS Community Health and Resource Center in Dearborn.

“We are proud to have stepped in to meet the need for testing of those serving on the front lines of the pandemic in partnership with WSU and ACCESS,” said Charles Shanley, M.D., president and chief executive officer of WSUPG and vice dean of Clinical Affairs for WSU. “We thank the United Way for their support of our drive-through program. By joining forces with the city, we can streamline processes, limit use of personal protective equipment and reduce the need for traffic control freeing up already stretched police department resources.”
