Wayne State University issued the following announcement on May 29.
The Wayne State University Police Department has taken a stronger stand on police use of excessive force with the establishment of the headquarters of the National De-escalation Training Center (NDTC) on our campus. The NDTC has filed for non-profit corporation status with the state of Michigan and has already begun de-escalation training of sworn Wayne State University police officers.
Training offered at the NDTC has been specifically developed and designed to exceed traditional de-escalation methods. The program takes training to a new level by utilizing rapid personality assessment to de-escalate subjects based upon individual and observable behavioral traits. The goal of the NDTC is to foster positive interactions with citizens and to reduce the number of needless and tragic encounters that result in injuries and deaths to both citizens and police officers.
Wayne State President M. Roy Wilson is scheduled to appear on CNN with John King on Tuesday, June 2, between noon and 1 p.m. to discuss the training center.
