Wayne County voters recently overwhelmingly approved the renewal of a property tax levy that estimates indicate will generate approximately $42 million annually for county operations and services.
Proposition O, Operating Budget Property Tax Renewal, passed by a significant margin, with 274,549 voting in favor, and only 83,412 voting against the renewal, according to Ballotpedia.
The tax was first authorized in 2009, and the renewal will continue it for another 10 years, according to Ballotpedia. The estimated tax rate residents will pay under the reauthorized levy -- as reported in the ballot question voters were faced with -- is $95.29 per $100,000 in assessed property tax value.
According to the ballot question voters were presented, revenue raised by the tax goes toward “programs for arrest, detention and prosecution of criminals, juvenile court and related services, public health, recreation, county parks, job training, senior citizen services and programs for meeting medical needs of the poor, the disabled and the aged.”
