During a weekend in September, the Michigan National Guard assisted the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to administer COVID-19 tests in Hamtramck, which is in Wayne County.
There are over 20 trained coronavirus testing teams in the Michigan National Guard, which helped the Michigan Department of Health at Bridge Academy East on Sept. 12 and 13 in Hamtramck, according to Michigan.gov. These three-person teams each have a certified medic who does the testing and two members who complete paperwork, logistics and other non-medical tasks.
“Since March, members of the Michigan National Guard have performed more than 600 community-based missions in 81 of 83 Michigan counties as part of our state’s response to COVID-19. This includes COVID-19 testing support for more than 290 long-term care facilities throughout Michigan, 7 million pounds of food distributed at local food banks and more than 97,300 COVID-19 tests administered as part of community-based testing initiatives,” said Maj. Gen. Paul Rogers, adjutant general and director of the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, according to Michigan.gov. “COVID-19 is still a very real threat to our state, and widespread testing remains one of the best ways communities can assess their level of risk for the disease."
