October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Rep. Joe Bellino (R-Monroe) has shared a Facebook post recognizing the month for its importance.
In his post, he writes, "Please join me in helping increase awareness for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. By working together and educating others, we can help support women in need. Early detection can save lives."
Breast Cancer Awareness Month started on October 1 and will last until the end of the month. This is used as an opportunity to increase support for survivors, raise awareness of the disease and to raise money to help with the treatment of patients.

Breast cancer is a deadly cancer that affects millions of women and some men -- about 1% of breast cancers occur in men, according to the Susan G. Komen website -- on a yearly basis. Several organizations around the world have been able to make great strides in the detection and treatment of breast cancer, but help is still needed for funding, awareness and support. You can lean more about breast cancer at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office on Women's Health.
