Plymouth-Canton Community Schools issued the following announcement.
P-CCS Families:
As we communicated via the district website yesterday, Wayne County Health Division has released its latest risk levels for P-CCS communities. As of these latest metrics, Canton Township is in Risk Level E, while the City of Plymouth and Plymouth Township are both in Risk Level D.
Communication continues to be key during this time, and we want to make sure you know what this means for our district. It is important to share that Risk Level E does not mean an entire district is required to move to remote learning, or to do so for an indefinite period of time. There are school districts in the state that are operating in counties with this level, as it is an individual determination based on both community and school-based factors.
We continue to work in consultation with Wayne County Health Department (WCHD) concerning the recent increase in local transmission rates of COVID-19 in our community and how this impacts our instructional delivery models. The factors that the health department reviews include the number of cases within a community, the trend of cases (increasing or decreasing), the positivity rate for the county, the school district mitigation plan, the number of cases in individual school buildings, evidence or lack of evidence of transmission of cases within a school, and the recommendation considerations on the health department matrix based on community spread level rating.
As of today, with our approved Mitigation Plan in place, we will continue to move forward with providing in-person instruction at the elementary level, while keeping our secondary students remote through the end of the first semester. We will continue to monitor our local data concerning COVID-19 transmission in consultation with WCHD and make any adjustments to our learning plans, whether it be at an individual school building or district-wide, at any time that it may become necessary to do so.
As we have communicated previously, our Mitigation Plan is aimed at limiting the transmission of COVID-19 within our school buildings. In our ongoing communications with WCHD, we continuously receive positive feedback and high marks for our mitigation efforts, and they have noted that, although there is evidence of community spread in our municipalities, transmission is not occurring in a large majority of school settings. We want to remind our entire school community that strict adherence to our Mitigation Plan is effective and important to our continued effort to minimize in-school transmission. Metrics and data will guide our risk levels and decisions, but what is most important to the health and safety of our students and staff is what happens in our schools every day.
We encourage all members of our school community to adhere to recommended health and safety practices for mitigating the spread of COVID-19. This includes wearing a face covering or mask, practicing frequent hand washing, allowing for physical distancing whenever possible, and staying home when sick and watching for potential symptoms of illness before going to school each day. We know it’s hard, but when possible, stay away from gatherings and other indoor activities that increase the risk of exposure to COVID-19.
The health and safety of all members of our school community remains our number one priority.
Thank you for your continued patience and support of Plymouth-Canton Community Schools.
