Canton Public Safety Department issued the following announcement on Jan 1.

As we reflect on 2021 there are a few things that the Canton Police would like to share with you to help make 2022 safer …

Drunk driving arrests continue to rise in our community - with all of the ride share services out there why do people still drive under the influence?  STOP IT!!!  Before you go out and consume adult beverages, please be responsible and find a ride…

Motor vehicle thefts were also up in 2021 – some of these vehicles stolen were a crime of opportunity! Please remove your key fob from your vehicle – yes, we know it is convenient to leave your keys in the car but thieves know that this is a new trend and are waiting for you to do this, they then mosey through your neighborhoods and steal your car while you are sleeping…   so, before you tuck yourself in at night take a moment to make sure you have your key fob in hand and lock your vehicle…

SCAMS!!!  If you did not enter a lottery, the Publishers Clearing House or purchase anything on Amazon or any other online store then they are not rewarding you!  We see a steady increase in residents being victims of scams.  Scammers can be very convincing, pushy and persuasive in their tactics.  Do not allow them to convince you that you won something and now owe them money.  If they ask you to go buy gift cards and want you to provide them the gift card code on the back of the card IT IS A SCAM!!!

As we enter 2022 take a moment to think about one step you can take to keep yourself safe this new year.  We are aware that overall Canton is a very safe community, often times our residents become complacent and this could lead to our residents falling victim to a crime of opportunity.  So, for 2022 we would like you to take a moment and think about how you can make it harder to be a victim of a crime:

1. Close your overhead garage doors when you are not in the vicinity of it.

2. Remove your keys and valuables from your vehicle, then lock the doors

3. Do not leave your purse wide open in a shopping cart while you turn around and grab something off a shelf!

4...

Feel free to add to this list, wishing you a safe New Year's Eve…
