Winter snow is coming!
During major snowfalls, the City of Detroit clears and maintains 674 miles of our major roads with city contractors plowing 1884 miles of residential streets.
The city utilizes a three-level system for snow removal, depending on the amount of snow that falls:
Level 1 - DPW crews will clear snow from major City thoroughfares by salting. Level 2 - DPW crews will clear snow from major City thoroughfares by plowing and salting. Level 3 - DPW crews will plow and salt major thoroughfares; contractors will be deployed to plow a minimum 16-foot path on residential side streets.
In addition, the city may declare a snow emergency, restricting parking along major corridors. Residents and business owners are required to clear snow from their sidewalks.
Freeways, county roads, and major arteries will be maintained by Wayne County and the Michigan Department of Transportation.
