The Hazel Park Board of Education heard reports from students and recognized some of the district's athletic achievements during the board's March 20 meeting.
The board welcomed bowling coach Eric Gregory, who coached the joint boys and girls team this year. Gregory honored the girls' team, which earned a trip to the state tournament for the first time. The boys' team were Gold Division champions and also qualified for the state tournament. One of the boys, Myron Pickett, notched his first-career perfect 300 game.
"These girls worked extremely hard during the season and like Tom said, during the summer, So they deserve every recognition they can get," Gregory told the board. "First league title since 2008. That required a whole lot of work from these girls, and I know I appreciate it. I'm sure when they're old like me, they'll appreciate it a little bit more. But I had some great memories and I just want to say thank you to you guys."
Gregory celebrated the fact that the girls are back-to-back division champions. He said he was very proud of how hard the teams worked and how hard they competed in state competition, thanks to a great deal of support from the district. The board also honored the girls' basketball team, which won its first conference tournament since 2008. Coach Dakota Ogles was also named coach of the year. The board congratulated the team and gave its members certificates in recognition of the season.
The board also received presentations from high school students. Senior Jenna and junior Sara gave a report on the start of spring sports, such as golf, baseball, soccer and track, saying the teams are expanding this year, adding a JV team. The senior banquet went well, with seniors looking forward to decision day and graduation in less than two months.
Landon was chosen as this year’s Ogles CTE award recipient. Student Morgan was chosen to have her art displayed in Cincinnati Ohio at a national ceramics exhibition, the students reported. The school's juniors are looking at a lot of SAT and college testing coming up, and the high school is getting ready to open up their spring musical performance. Their symphonic band and concert band recently attended Festival, where the symphonic band got a 1 rating, the highest possible score.
