Two Dearborn Public Schools students provided an update on activities throughout the district at a recent board meeting.
Liliana Turfah and Maya Hassan announced that district bus drivers Venise Ledford and Ervin Warren were chosen to receive Wayne County Excellence in Transportation Awards.
They also acknowledged the 16 students from the Dearborn Center for Math, Science and Technology who attended the Science and Engineering Fair last month in Detroit, with student Rawan Fakih taking first place in her category. Hadi Beydoun, Jad Elhinnawi and Sam Roberts placed third in theirs and several others notched fourth and fifth place finishes.
The board also watched a video from CBS News that highlighted a recent day of caring in the district.
“We're going to have a little video from our care to the (Care to the) Core Day,” said Superintendent Glenn Maleyko. “This was also covered by CBS News from reporter Amir Jacobson, who went with us throughout the day on the bus as we were doing positive activities for our traditional care to the core day. I would say, as you could see from there, it was going on all day. It was a great day of activities. I really got to give credit to our staff, our students and the school community for coming together.”
Dearborn High school students also received commendation for their record number of nominations for the Student Production Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Michigan chapter, with two students earning seven nominations each, among others from the team.
Both finalists in the Long Film category are from Dearborn High, and the awards ceremony will be held on April 23. Turfah and Hassan also announced the results of recent fundraising efforts, with Edsel Ford’s team raising almost $6,200 in their charity week to give to earthquake victims in Syria and Turkey.
Members of the Salina Intermediate school raised $2,400 to support four orphans for a year and Geer Park Elementary was also able to raise almost $2,500 for earthquake victims.
The board thanked the two girls for spreading good news from the district and asked them a few questions about their own lives. Trufah plans on attending either Wayne State or Detroit Mercy for college, while Hassan is planning on attending Wayne State for biomedical engineering.
