The Detroit Fire Department (DFD) will host multiple open houses throughout October to engage the community and teach participants about fire prevention. The month of activities will kick off with the celebration National Fire Prevention Week, a nationally recognized fire safety campaign. This year’s theme, “Cooking Starts with You,” will provide residents nationwide with the tools to keep themselves and others safe while cooking.

The first open house of the month will be held Sunday, October 8th, from 12-3 p.m. at Engine 56 on 18601 Ryan. Detroit residents are invited to attend the free event that will include fire house safety demonstrations, hands-only CPR training, and distribution of free fire extinguishers, in addition to fire safety education. The open house is designed to be fun for the whole family, with live entertainment and special guests Miss. Michigan, Skilla Baby, and Trick Trick.

“The programming DFD has in store for National Fire Prevention Week will be educational and immersive. This is a week that brings the community together every year and I’m excited to see our residents learning and having fun with our firefighters,” said Interim Fire Commissioner, Charles Simms. “Education through community engagement is something we take seriously at the Detroit Fire Department. We want Detroiters to know how to prevent fire emergencies and exactly what to do if they happen.”

The Detroit Fire Department has serviced Detroit for over 121 years. The department is recognized as one of the highest-ranking fire departments in the country. Their deployment of quick emergency response resources, implementation of fire safety education, and enforcement of safety codes have allowed them to save countless lives throughout the City. Residents can access fire safety resources by going to any firehouse in Detroit.
