Most City Of Detroit Offices to Close for Christmas and New Year's Holidays

Most City of Detroit offices will be closed starting Friday, Dec. 22, 2023, in observance of the Christmas and New Year’s holidays and reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024. Normal police, fire, and bus services will be provided.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) will NOT collect refuse, recycling, and bulk items on Christmas and New Year’s Day. Collection will occur one day later than scheduled. During both weeks, Friday's collection will take place on Saturday.

The Ford Underground Garage and Eastern Market Garage will be closed on Christmas and New Year’s Day. There will be no parking enforcement at parking meters from Dec. 22 - Jan. 1, and individuals are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to support Detroit businesses.

The Detroit Health Department will operate two immunization clinics on Wednesday, Dec. 27, at 100 Mack Avenue and Samaritan Center. No appointments are needed, and walk-ins are welcome at both locations. The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) clinics will be open during the holidays at various locations.

The Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT) will operate bus service on Christmas and New Year’s Day as a Sunday schedule. Regular Sunday bus service will be provided on Dec. 24 and Dec. 31, and regular weekday service on Friday, Dec. 22, and Friday, Dec. 29.

The Detroit People Mover will operate during the holidays, but not on Christmas and New Year's Day.

The Water and Sewerage Department will continue to respond to emergencies, including water main breaks. Customer Service for account assistance will be closed from Dec. 22-25 and Dec. 29-Jan 1. Customers can still pay their bill by phone using the automated system or at a kiosk or access their accounts online.

The Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department (BSEED) will be closed from Dec. 22 through January 1. All electronic and online services are offered 24/7 via ACCELA, however, users should expect a delayed response. In case of an emergency, individuals may call BSEED at (313) 224-3154.

The Office of the Chief Financial Officer will be closed during the holiday, but customers can visit the official website to download forms, view financial reports, access property tax information, and make payments. Various options are available to pay City of Detroit property taxes, including online, mobile app, phone, kiosk, or mail.

Although offices may be closed, many City services, such as tax and fee payments and permit applications, are available online at detroitmi.gov. Individuals can also utilize the DivDat kiosk or mobile app for some payments to the City of Detroit.
