The City of Detroit is taking steps to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents as temperatures are expected to drop below 20 degrees in the coming days. To provide relief from the cold, the city has opened warming centers and respite locations throughout the area.
For those who are homeless and in need of shelter during cold weather, four warming centers are now open around the clock. These centers not only offer a warm place to stay, but also provide two meals, showers, sleeping accommodations, and housing assistance services. The warming centers cater to different demographics, with specific centers serving families and women, single males, and men, women, and families. Cass Community Social Services, Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, and Joseph Walker Williams Recreation Center are among the organizations providing these essential services.
To access these warming centers or year-round emergency shelters, residents can call the City of Detroit's Housing Services Helpline at 866-313-2520 during the hours of 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Friday. Veterans seeking shelter should call 866-313-2520 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.
In addition to the warming centers, the City of Detroit is also offering respite locations for residents to seek refuge during normal operating hours. These locations include Detroit recreation centers and public library branches. However, please note that these facilities will be closed on Martin Luther King Day, January 15, but will reopen on Tuesday, January 16.

Additionally, all Detroit Public Library branches are available for residents to stay warm during their normal operating hours. The Main Library and branch libraries will be closed on Monday, January 15, and will reopen on Tuesday, January 16. Some of the branch libraries include Bowen Branch, Campbell Branch, Chandler Park Branch, Chaney Branch, Duffield Branch, Edison Branch, Elmwood Park Branch, Franklin Branch, Hubbard Branch, Jefferson Branch, Knapp Branch, Lincoln Branch, Parkman Branch, Redford Branch, and Sherwood Forest Branch.
