Mayor Mike Duggan and Council Member Latisha Johnson joined community partners and residents at Chandler Park on Detroit's east side to mark the beginning of construction on the $14 million Chandler Park Fieldhouse. This state-of-the-art facility is being funded by President Biden's American Rescue Plan Act and will be the first sports dome in Detroit. The fieldhouse, expected to open in 2025, will provide year-round sports, fitness, and recreation options for Detroit residents.
The Chandler Park Fieldhouse, spanning 130,000 square feet, will be located within Chandler Park, which is the fourth largest park in the city, covering 200 acres. It is designed to fill the recreation center gap in the neighborhood and enhance the quality of life for residents. The facility will feature a multi-use court for basketball, volleyball, and pickleball, a football field and track for various sports, multi-purpose rooms for community activities, administrative spaces for efficient management, shower rooms and inclusive bathrooms for residents, and a 200+ space parking lot with sustainable stormwater management.
Mayor Duggan expressed his gratitude to President Biden and the American Rescue Plan Act, stating, "Thank you to President Biden and the American Rescue Plan Act, Detroiters will now have a great new facility to call their own." He added, "The Chandler Park Fieldhouse will not only enhance the quality of life for residents living near the park, it will offer all Detroiters a place to go for indoor sports year-round."
Crystal Perkins, Director of the General Services Department, highlighted the community's vision becoming a reality. She said, "After many years of community input and planning efforts, we are excited to see this vision become a reality for the Chandler community." Perkins emphasized that the Fieldhouse will provide Detroit youth with the same access and quality found in neighboring suburbs, showcasing the city's commitment to parks and recreation.
Councilmember Latisha Johnson, representing District 4, expressed her excitement about the project, stating, "The Chandler Park Fieldhouse will be a tremendous asset to Detroit's athletic/sports community and is a welcomed addition to District 4." She also emphasized that the facility will help fill the lack of recreational facilities in the district and provide year-round access to various sports and recreational activities.
The Construction & Demolition Department of the City of Detroit is overseeing the construction of the Chandler Park Fieldhouse. LaJuan Counts, executive director of the department, expressed gratitude to the Detroit City Council and Mayor Duggan for their leadership. Counts said, "Together, we're building not just a structure but a brighter future for our community."
Construction of the Chandler Park Fieldhouse is set to be completed in 2025, bringing a state-of-the-art sports facility to the Detroit community.
