Residents in several Michigan counties impacted by the severe storms in August 2023 are being urged to apply for FEMA disaster assistance before the April 8 deadline. According to the FEMA press release, homeowners and renters with uninsured or underinsured damage caused by the storms are eligible for assistance.
"FEMA also offers free services to help survivors communicate with FEMA personnel on the phone or at Disaster Recovery Centers," said a FEMA spokesperson. The agency encourages individuals who have already made repairs or started their recovery process to still apply for assistance.
For those seeking help, applications can be submitted online at gov, through the FEMA mobile app, or by calling 800-621-3362. Additionally, a Disaster Recovery Center has been set up at Kemeny Recreation Center in Detroit for in-person assistance from March 18 to March 23, 2024.
"It’s important to read your FEMA decision letter carefully," advised the spokesperson. "You may just need to provide additional information or documents to keep your application moving." The agency will continue to accept appeals and assist applicants with questions even after the application deadline has passed.
Residents are reminded that receiving a letter stating ineligibility for FEMA assistance does not necessarily mean they will not receive any help. They are encouraged to visit a Disaster Recovery Center or contact the FEMA Helpline for further assistance or to file an appeal.
The FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362 is available for individuals who speak different languages or require relay services. The agency is dedicated to providing support to all applicants throughout the assistance process.
