In response to the extensive damage caused by severe storms in 2023, FEMA has extended the deadline for homeowners and renters in multiple counties to apply for disaster assistance. Individuals impacted by the August 24 - 26 storms are urged to take advantage of this opportunity before the new deadline of May 8, 2024.

Those who have already initiated repairs or started their recovery process are still eligible to apply for FEMA assistance. Additionally, individuals who may have initially been deemed ineligible are encouraged to carefully review their FEMA decision letter as there may be avenues to still receive support by providing further information or documents.

To facilitate the application process and address any inquiries, affected individuals are advised to visit a Disaster Recovery Center or contact the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362, where specialists proficient in various languages are available to assist. Furthermore, FEMA will continue to accept appeals and provide support even after the application deadline of May 8 has passed.

The Disaster Recovery Centers in Detroit, including Kemeny Recreation Center, Butzel Family Center, and Samaritan Center, have specific operating hours to accommodate applicants. Starting from Monday, April 1, these centers will be available to provide assistance and guidance on weekdays and Saturdays.

For more information regarding the disaster recovery operation in Michigan and to access additional services, individuals can visit www.fema.gov/disaster/4757. The FEMA Helpline remains a valuable resource for those seeking aid during this challenging time.
