Detroit residents and city officials came together to celebrate the successful completion of more than 3,000 alleys cleaned through the Alley Clean Up program since its launch in 2020. The initiative, aimed at combating blight and illegal dumping, has significantly improved the quality of life for residents across the city.

Mayor Duggan expressed his gratitude towards the program, stating, "The Alley Cleanup program has been one of our most popular and has made a tremendous improvement along thousands of residential blocks now." He also acknowledged the efforts of city workers and residents who are committed to maintaining the cleanliness of the alleys in the future.

Councilmember Fred Durhal praised Mayor Duggan for his leadership in addressing blight city-wide, saying, "I am so grateful for this program and for the city workers that are making it happen." Rita Ross, President of the Russell Woods Sullivan Area Association, shared her appreciation for the program, highlighting the positive impact on the community by stating, "These alleys have been a problem for a long time, and it's such a relief to see them being cleaned up so children can play safely in them."

The Alley Clean Up program has not only focused on clearing debris but also on engaging residents in the revitalization efforts of their neighborhoods. Councilmember Durhal emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, "Together, we are not only cleaning up our alleys but also paving the way towards a safer, more connected, and vibrant neighborhood."

Residents interested in participating in the program can sign up by selecting alleys identified by block clubs or neighborhood associations registered with the Department of Neighborhoods. After completing an alley clean-up request form, block clubs are required to commit to maintaining the alley by performing regular cleanups.

The program has not only helped in cleaning up overgrown alleys but has also provided employment opportunities for returning citizens, contributing to Detroit's neighborhood revitalization efforts. With a commitment from both city workers and residents, the Alley Clean Up program continues to make a positive impact on communities throughout Detroit.
