Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan announced a significant milestone in affordable housing investments, with over $1 billion being allocated towards the development of 4,646 units in the city over the past five years. The focus on affordable housing in Detroit has been a city-wide effort, with most units reserved for households earning between 30% and 60% of the area median income.

Mayor Duggan expressed his gratitude towards the various funding partners, developers, and city council members for their dedication to prioritizing Detroit's lower-income individuals and families. He highlighted the importance of this collective effort in preventing a housing homelessness crisis and ensuring that Detroit remains a city where residents of all income levels can choose to live in any neighborhood.

Reflecting on the achievement, Mayor Duggan stated, "Over the past five years, we have seen a communitywide commitment to affordable housing that is unprecedented in Detroit and, quite possibly, the country." He also acknowledged the pivotal role played by city officials, funding partners, and developers in driving this initiative forward.

Council President Sheffield echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the commitment to providing safe, quality, and affordable housing for all Detroiters. Sheffield stated, "The $1 billion in cumulative investments is illustrative of our commitment to provide safe, quality and affordable housing for all Detroiters."

Julie Schneider, director of the housing and revitalization department, highlighted the impact of the investments, noting that thousands of residents are benefitting from the stability and security that come with affordable, quality housing. The projects span across 46 neighborhoods and every City Council district in Detroit, ensuring that critical affordable housing resources are available for years to come.

Former Group Executive for Planning, Housing, and Development for the City, Donald Rencher, commended Detroit's commitment to affordable housing. Rencher emphasized the importance of inclusivity and prioritizing affordable housing as a cornerstone of economic development for the city's growth.

Developer Amin Irving reflected on the progress made in Detroit, stating, "Eclipsing $1 Billion of economic investment in affordable housing since 2019 is a testament to the hard work that Mayor Duggan and the City Council have demonstrated."

The $1 billion investment in affordable housing projects in Detroit represents a significant step towards creating a more inclusive and equitable city for all residents. The dedication of various stakeholders, from city officials to developers, has been instrumental in driving this monumental effort forward.
