The City of Detroit has announced the commencement of the third phase of road closures in preparation for the upcoming NFL Draft Experience. Starting on Monday, April 15 at 12am, the closures will have a significant impact on travel in the city, particularly affecting Eastbound and Westbound Jefferson Avenue in front of Hart Plaza. The closures are necessary to facilitate the build-out of the NFL Draft Experience presented by Rocket Mortgage, a free fan festival scheduled during all three days of the Draft.
According to the city, "all sidewalks are open, access to all businesses has been preserved, and patronizing our Downtown establishments during the Draft build out is encouraged." Specific road closures for phase three will be in effect from April 15 at 12am until May 6 at 5am. These include closures on Jefferson Avenue, Bates Street, Atwater Street, Brush Street, and changes to tunnel traffic.
As part of the preparations, phase two closures have already been implemented since April 8 and will last until May 5, affecting various streets in the downtown area. Phase one closures, which began on March 29, will continue until May 7, impacting streets like Randolph Street, Monroe Street, and Bates Street.
Parking restrictions will also be in place to ensure ample space for emergency responders. The city advises motorists to be vigilant of parking restriction signs and notes that improperly parked cars will be towed at the owners' expense. The Ford Underground Garage will remain accessible until April 23.
The NFL Draft Experience promises an array of activities for residents and visitors, including exhibits, sponsor activations, photo opportunities with the Vince Lombardi Trophy, a Play 60 Zone, merchandise shopping, and autograph sessions with NFL players and Legends. The city is gearing up for the event with the construction of the NFL Draft Theater and the display of NFL team banners and Detroit sports legends' jerseys on downtown infrastructure.
Updates on road closures and event details will be available on the NFL One Pass app, visitdetroit.com, and detroitmi.gov. Fans are encouraged to register on the NFL One Pass app in advance for the free event. Additionally, transportation updates have been provided to assist fans in reaching downtown for the Draft, including information on parking and alternative transportation options such as the Detroit People Mover, QLINE, DDOT, RTA, SMART, Uber, and Lyft.
