Mayor Mike Duggan, along with Arts Culture and Entrepreneurship Director Rochelle Riley and the Ford Foundation, have introduced renowned poet jessica Care moore as the new Detroit Poet Laureate. The appointment comes as a significant recognition of moore's talent and contributions to the literary world.

Expressing his admiration for moore's work, Mayor Duggan stated, “jessica is a rare and gifted poet with a unique voice that has been shaped by her life experiences here in Detroit.” The Mayor emphasized the importance of celebrating the creative talent present in the city and expressed pride in naming moore as the Poet Laureate.

In response to her appointment, jessica Care moore expressed her gratitude and sense of responsibility, saying, “I am honored and absolutely moved to be appointed Detroit Poet Laureate. Naomi Long Madgett was a mentor, guide & inspiration." She also highlighted the significance of uplifting poetry and promoting literacy and arts access, especially for young people. Moore emphasized, “We must uplift poetry & increase literacy & access to the arts. Our young people deserve it. Poems save lives, poems inspire.”

Kevin Ryan from the Ford Foundation commended the recognition of moore's artistic contributions, stating, “We at the Ford Foundation believe that the arts bring vibrancy and pride to cities – and we love seeing great homegrown artists like jessica Care moore recognized for the beauty and brilliance she has given to Detroit.”

As the new Detroit Poet Laureate, jessica Care moore will compose poems for special events and occasions, engaging with the city's residents, particularly children, to make poetry more accessible and relevant. Her role will encompass planning and leading poetry-centered events across Detroit, giving an annual address at the Detroit Public Library, participating in programs that honor the city's diversity, and writing a singular poem for a year-end presentation.
