The Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) has announced the closure of Eight Mile Road at the I-275 overpass starting from May 2 to May 13. According to the announcement, the closure is necessary for infrastructure work to provide redundancy in the regional system.
GLWA stated, "During the closure GLWA will be installing a 54-inch transmission main across Eight Mile Road and restore the section of roadway within this work area. This is the last section of the 7.5 miles of transmission main to be installed between 14 Mile and Eight Mile as a part of this project."
Detour routes have been outlined for drivers affected by the closure. For eastbound traffic, drivers will be directed to take Haggerty Road to Seven Mile Road, then east on Seven Mile Road to Newburgh Road, and finally north on Newburgh Road back to Eight Mile Road. Westbound traffic will follow a similar detour, with directions to travel south on Newburgh Road to Seven Mile Road, then west on Seven Mile Road to Haggerty Road, and north on Haggerty Road to Eight Mile Road.
Drivers are advised to expect heavy traffic on alternative routes during the closure period and to plan accordingly. GLWA also suggests that individuals may wish to avoid the area and seek alternate routes through the closure.
