Community members, vendors, and city leaders gathered at a pop-up event on a once-vacant block in Detroit's east side, showcasing the potential for future community activity and commerce. The event, located along Gratiot near East McNichols, featured local vendors, food trucks, music, and activities, aiming to highlight the possibilities of the area.
Mayor Mike Duggan emphasized the importance of collaboration between the city and residents, stating, "Change happens when the city and residents work together and have the support of private partners." The event was part of the larger Gratiot/7 Mile Strategic Neighborhood Fund area, which aims to revitalize various neighborhoods across the city.
Invest Detroit and Fifth Third Bank are among the key partners supporting the revitalization efforts in the G7 area. Jermaine Ruffin of Invest Detroit highlighted the fund's focus on investing in residents and small businesses to create stronger communities. David Girodat, Regional Vice President for Eastern Michigan at Fifth Third Bank, emphasized the bank's commitment to improving the lives of residents and business owners through collaborative investments.
The activation in the G/7 area is part of a broader initiative to spur investments in commercial corridors, housing development, park improvements, and streetscapes. Khalil Ligon of the City of Detroit Planning and Development Department expressed the city's goal to showcase the potential for commercial redevelopment in the area, creating a vibrant space for residents and potential buyers.
Krista Nightengale, Executive Director of Better Block, shared her excitement about the project, stating, "We are excited to be part of this transformative project in the Gratiot/7 Mile area." The event, which was a one-day activity, will continue throughout the summer, serving as a community gathering spot and small business incubator on a high-traffic corridor.
The revitalization efforts in the G/7 area aim to create a vibrant and engaging space that reflects the unique character of the neighborhood, providing opportunities for community members and businesses to thrive.
