DETROIT -- Forty members of the 2023 Wayne State University football team have been recognized with GLIAC (Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) All-Academic accolades. This marks the fourth consecutive year that WSU has produced at least 40 academic honorees, with 27 student-athletes named to the All-Academic Excellence Team, matching the program's highest number in its 14-year history. Over the past nine years, 380 Warrior football student-athletes have earned GLIAC All-Academic honors.
The criteria for these accolades require that student-athletes be active members on the roster at the end of the season and not be freshmen or first-year transfer students.
The 27 student-athletes receiving All-Academic Excellence Team honors for maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5 include graduate students Eli McLean (Clarkston, Mich. / Pontiac Notre Dame Prep), Noah Nicklin (Davisburg, Mich. / Clarkston), Kane Quinlan (Troy, Mich. / Birmingham Brother Rice), Drake Reid (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester), Chrishoun Roberts (Garfield Heights, Ohio / Lakewood St. Edward), and Jarrett Short (Grand Blanc, Mich.). Also honored were redshirt senior Max Nicklin (Davisburg, Mich. / Clarkston); seniors Maxx Fisher (Midland, Mich.) and Josh Kulka (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Chippewa Valley); redshirt juniors Blake Gilliam (Allen Park, Mich.), Hayden Loya (Wyandotte, Mich. / Roosevelt), Griffin Milovanski (Saugatuck, Mich.), Tyler Schompert (Olmsted Twp., Ohio / Olmsted Falls), Jeremy Taras (Macomb, Mich. / Henry Ford II), Brayden Vredeveld (Hudsonville, Mich.), and Charles Wesley (Clinton, Mich. / Chippewa Valley); redshirt sophomores Aaron Mass (Livonia, Mich. / Franklin), John Rayba (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Stoney Creek), Gus Taylor (South Lyon, Mich.), Aidan Tweedy (Oswego, Ill.), and Draven Wilson (Macomb, Mich. / Chippewa Valley); sophomore Ben Griskie (Macomb, Mich. / Lutheran North); along with redshirt freshmen Cole Canter (Newark, Ohio / Newark Catholic), Ethan Gates (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview), Colby Horn (Menomonee Falls, Wis. / Sussex Hamilton), Gabe Mendoza (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) and Quincy Salter (Livonia, Mich./ Stevenson).
Noah Nicklin was honored for the fifth straight season while Quinlan and Short were recognized for the fourth time in their careers.
The 13 football student-athletes named to the GLIAC All-Academic Team for maintaining a cumulative GPA between 3.0-3.49 include graduate students Matt Buschman and Shavez Hawkins Jr.; redshirt seniors Niko Mosley and McKinley Underwood; seniors Kofe Kimbrell and Jeff Knight; redshirt juniors Blake Bustard and Donte Reed; junior Te'Avion Warren; redshirt sophomores Owen Salingue and D'Marco Singleton; along with redshirt freshmen Joe Clark Jr., and Nick Ostas.
Kimbrell was recognized for the fifth time in his career while Underwood received his fourth consecutive GLIAC All-Academic recognition.
