Wayne State women's basketball achieves significant academic honors

DETROIT -- The 2023-24 Wayne State University women's basketball team had 10 players named GLIAC All-Academic honorees, tying for the second most in program history. Over the past seven years, the Warriors have had a total of 63 GLIAC All-Academic honorees.

According to the criteria, student-athletes must be active members on the roster at the end of the season and not be freshmen or first-year transfer students.

Named to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team for maintaining a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.5 were redshirt seniors Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) and Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino), juniors Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma), Ally Shagena (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron Northern), and Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center), along with redshirt freshman Ashley Bower (Portland, Mich.).

Fugate (Nursing - 3.62) is on the All-Academic Excellence Team for the fourth consecutive year, while McArthur (Exercise & Sport Science - 3.75) was recognized for the third straight season after transferring from Central Michigan in the summer of 2020. Leister (Management - 3.83), Shagena (Finance - 4.00), and Tripp (Health and Physical Education Teaching - 3.94) each collected their second consecutive All-Academic Excellence Team honor. Bower (Exercise & Sport Science - 3.97) was first-year eligible.

Earning a spot on the GLIAC All-Academic Team for maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.0-3.49 were sophomores Hillary Griffin (Jackson, Mich./Parma Western), Thaya Luse (Elburn, Ill./Example Academy), Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.), and Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.).

Griffin (Secondary Education - 3.31), Luse (Management - 3.14), Lutchka (Global Supply Chain Management - 3.32), and Thompson (Mechanical Engineering - 3.41) were all first-year eligible.
