Wayne State men’s tennis team honored with ITA All-Academic award

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team, which reached the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals for the third consecutive year, received the ITA All-Academic Team award along with six student-athletes being recognized with ITA Scholar-Athlete honors.

To be recognized as an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must meet the following requirements: have a team grade point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.00 scale), all student-athletes included should be listed on the institutional eligibility form, and all varsity letter winners should be factored into the team GPA for the current academic year.

WSU posted a 3.464 average GPA for the 2022-24 academic year.

Earning Scholar-Athlete accolades for having a grade-point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and being listed on the institutional eligibility form were:

Cedric Drenth, Jr., Sulzbach, Germany, 3.937, Management

Daniel Grey, Sr., Wiesbaden, Germany, 4.00, Neuroscience Honors

Benjamin Hill, Fr., Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, 3.581, Sport Management

Luke Laws, Gr., Sunderland, England, 3.555 master's degree in Applied Mathematics

Emil Mikkelsen Sr., Soenderborg DenmarkJr., 3.963 Sport Management

Joe Steele Sr., Beverly Hills Mich (U of Detroit Jesuit H.S.), 3.734 Finance

Wayne State finished the 2023-24 campaign with a 17-11 overall record which included a 5-1 mark in GLIAC regular-season play a Midwest Region title and a victory at the NCAA Finals round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals for the third consecutive season.
