Wayne State University men's golf team members Mat Hawryluk, Max Leppelmeier, and Ian Smith were named 2023-24 Cobalt All-America Scholars by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) on July 25. Subsequently, on July 30, the Warriors were recognized as one of 47 Division II programs to receive the GCAA Outstanding Team Academic Award.

Eligibility for the Cobalt Golf All-America Scholar nomination requires individuals to be sophomores, juniors, or seniors academically and athletically in NCAA Divisions I, II, III, NAIA, or NJCAA. Additionally, they must participate in at least 50% of their team's competitive rounds with specific stroke average thresholds and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2. Recipients must also exhibit high moral character and be in good standing at their institutions.

Hawryluk holds a cumulative GPA of 3.45 in Marketing with a season average of 72.5 strokes over 28.5 rounds. Leppelmeier has a GPA of 3.32 in Management with an average of 73.3 strokes over 31.5 rounds. Smith maintains a GPA of 3.63 in Marketing with an average of 73.5 strokes over 31.5 rounds.

In total, 227 NCAA Division II athletes from 77 schools earned Cobalt All-America Scholar honors for the academic year 2023-24. Missouri S&T had six recipients, tying with Georgia Southern, Mercer, Texas Tech, Yale (NCAA Division I), Trine (NCAA Division III), and Texas Wesleyan (NAIA) for the most recipients across all divisions.

Wayne State's men's golf team achieved a collective GPA of 3.25 for the academic year and was among the top-performing teams academically out of the more than two hundred schools that met or exceeded a team GPA threshold of 3.0.

Cobalt Golf is known for developing premium laser rangefinders aimed at golfers seeking high-performance gear at competitive prices.

The GCAA was established in 1958 as the professional organization for men's collegiate golf coaches across various divisions including NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA.
