Wayne State University's volleyball team is set to host two important matches this week at the Matthaei. The Warriors, who currently hold a 5-6 overall record and are 3-1 in the GLIAC, will face No. 16 Grand Valley State on Thursday evening, followed by a match against new league member Roosevelt on Friday.
Coach Tim Koth expressed anticipation for the upcoming games, stating, "We've got two important home matches this week. The team has been working hard and is improving. This should be a small test as to how much progress we have made."
The Warriors are coming off a successful weekend with victories over Saginaw Valley State and Lake Superior State. Wayne State secured a four-set win against Saginaw Valley State and swept Lake Superior State in straight sets, marking their second such victory since 2010.
Grand Valley State enters the match with an impressive 11-1 overall record and remains undefeated away from home under the guidance of fourth-year head coach Jason Johnson. The Lakers' only loss this season was to No. 9 Ferris State. Notably, Wayne State has lost its last two encounters with Grand Valley after previously dominating nine out of ten meetings.
Key player Jordyn Gates leads Grand Valley's efforts with notable statistics including kills (112) and assists (259). She also ranks high in blocks, service aces, and digs.
Roosevelt University seeks its first GLIAC victory under seventh-year head coach Nicasio Paquiz Jr., holding a current record of 1-11 overall. Despite recent struggles as they transition into Division II play, Roosevelt had one of their best seasons last year with significant individual accolades.
Roosevelt's standout players include Viktoria Marysheva with 106 kills and Zoe Hutchinson leading in assists with 249.
