Wayne State volleyball defeats Davenport to start GLIAC play

Wayne State University's volleyball team secured a victory against Davenport University in their opening match of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) on Friday night. The Warriors, with an overall record of 3-5 and a conference record of 1-0, defeated Davenport, which holds a 2-7 overall record and is 0-1 in the GLIAC.

The Warriors showcased a strong offensive performance by hitting .363, marking their highest efficiency this season and best output against a conference opponent since October 8, 2021. Head coach Tim Koth expressed satisfaction with the team's performance: "Tonight was a pretty clean performance by the team," he said. "As a staff, we were very pleased to see how much carry over we saw in the match from the training we did this week."

In the match that ended with scores of (-16, -21, -17), Wayne State started strong by hitting .519 in the first set. Molly Miller led all players with 15 kills and a .323 hitting percentage. Kayla Giroux contributed significantly with nine kills at a .615 clip and seven blocks. Other notable performances included Ella Uganski's .500 hitting percentage and Leigha Baldwin's .286.

Wayne State broke its four-match losing streak against Davenport with this win. Each of their last three victories over Davenport has taken place in Detroit.

Looking ahead, Wayne State will face ninth-ranked Ferris State on Saturday at Matthaei with the game starting at 2 p.m.
