Wayne State softball splits doubleheader against Saginaw Valley

Wayne State University's softball team split a doubleheader against Saginaw Valley State University on Saturday. In the first game, Saginaw Valley secured a 4-1 victory, while Wayne State claimed the second match with a 2-1 win.

In the opener, Wayne State scored initially in the second inning when Shelby Miller singled and was later brought home by Maddie Hool's RBI single. However, Saginaw Valley tied it up in the third inning with an unearned run and took the lead with a solo home run by Maddie Campagna in the fourth. The Cardinals further extended their advantage to 3-1 in the fifth after hits from Sara Moos and Olivia Sabin. Katelyn Pnacek sealed their win with another solo homer in the sixth inning.

Sydney Long pitched for Wayne State, allowing four runs on ten hits over six innings. Emily Depew led for Saginaw Valley, giving up just one run on four hits across seven innings.

In Game 2, Wayne State quickly gained a lead by scoring two runs in the first inning through efforts from Rylie Josephson and Abby Favela. The Cardinals managed to score once in the second but could not capitalize further as Alexis Bonk kept them at bay for Wayne State.

Bonk allowed only one run on five hits over seven innings of pitching for Wayne State. Aalana Kimble also pitched all seven innings for Saginaw Valley, surrendering two earned runs on seven hits.

Favela had an impressive performance for Wayne State going 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Miller contributed two hits and an RBI. Mya Purdy and Olivia Sabin were key players for Saginaw Valley with multiple base appearances.

Wayne State will continue its road trip with another GLIAC doubleheader at Grand Valley State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
