Wayne State University's women's tennis team achieved a 7-0 victory against Purdue Northwest on Friday, marking their seventh consecutive win. The match took place at the Match Point Tennis Facility in Griffith, Indiana. This win brings Wayne State closer to securing the GLIAC Regular-Season Championship, with a potential clinching victory possible in their upcoming game against Davenport.
In doubles, Malak Arafat and Martyna Szpakowska won 6-1 against Daniela Rubio and Alma Vazquez Rioja. Dea Gorgidze and Shanice Weekes also secured a win with a 6-4 score over Salma Raslan and Sasha Adams. However, the No. 11-ranked pair of Anais Ruyssen and Marta Komar faced defeat with a 6-4 loss to Hayley Tsuen and Sienna Lopez.
The singles matches saw Wayne State sweeping all six contests. Ruyssen overcame an initial set loss to Lopez by winning the subsequent sets 6-2 and 7-6 (7-4). Similarly, Arafat turned around her opening set loss to Rubio with scores of 7-5 and 6-3 in the following sets.
Komar defeated Rioja with scores of 6-2, 6-1, while Szpakowska claimed victory over Raslan with two sets of 6-1. Gorgidze maintained the momentum with wins of 6-4 and 6-3 against Tsuen. Justine Beaulieu made her debut appearance in this match by defeating Adams in straight sets of 6-2 each.
Several players extended their winning streaks: Arafat and Szpakowska both achieved seven straight wins, Ruyssen reached six, Gorgidze five, and Beaulieu four.
Wayne State will face Davenport next at the MVP SportsPlex in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Saturday at 1 p.m., concluding their regular season.
