Wayne State University's women's indoor track and field team is currently tied for sixth place after the first day of the 2024 GLIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships at the SVSU Fieldhouse. The team has accumulated 14 points, marking the fourth-highest total in the program's 12-year history.
In the team standings, Grand Valley State leads with 77 points, followed by Parkside with 27 points. Davenport and Northern Michigan are tied for third with 18 points each. Saginaw Valley State holds fifth place with 17 points.
Sophomore Idalia Shadhaya achieved a ninth-place finish in the pentathlon, scoring 2,656 points and surpassing her previous season-best mark. In the weight throw event, freshman Makayla Stewart placed 15th with a throw of 11.47 meters.
In the long jump event, sophomore Annabelle Smith secured five points for Wayne State with a fourth-place finish and a jump of 5.33 meters. Freshman Nicole Warren added two points with a seventh-place finish at 5.01 meters, while fifth-year senior Mikayla Williams finished tenth.
Neither of Wayne State's hurdlers advanced to Sunday's finals in the 60m hurdles event. Sophomore Richelle Cotter recorded a season-best time of 9.42 to finish in 13th place, while newcomer Keneisha Thomas posted a season-best time of 9.51 to place 14th.
Two athletes from Wayne State advanced to Sunday's finals in the 400m dash: junior Renae Kutcha had the fastest prelims time at 57.38 seconds, and sophomore Avery Wilson set a personal best at 57.61 seconds.
In other events, senior Mikaela Owen advanced in the 60m dash prelims with a time of 7.80 seconds. Freshman Sasha-Gay Thompson placed tenth in this event, while Smith was sixteenth.
Wayne State junior Reagan Justice earned three points with a sixth-place finish in the 5,000m race, recording a time of 17:24.21 minutes.
The Wayne State Distance Medley Relay team matched their seed position by finishing fifth and earning four points in their category.
The championships will continue on Sunday with various finals scheduled throughout the day.
