Wayne State University women's tennis players earn academic all-district honors

Four members of the Wayne State University women's tennis team have been awarded Academic All-District honors by College Sports Communicators. The student-athletes recognized for their performance both on and off the court include Malak Arafat, Anais Ruyssen, Martyna Szpakowska, and Shanice Weekes.

Sophomore Malak Arafat has been noted for her achievements this spring. She was named to the All-GLIAC First Team in singles and doubles after previously receiving Second Team honors. "The April 16, 2024, GLIAC Player of the Week," she is currently on an 11-match winning streak in singles. In doubles, she has formed a successful partnership with Martyna Szpakowska since February. Arafat is pursuing a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering with a cumulative GPA of 3.55.

Senior Anais Ruyssen has earned recognition as GLIAC Player of the Year for the second time in three years. She boasts a singles record of 19-8 at the first flight and holds a strong doubles record with partner Marta Komar. Ruyssen maintains a 3.78 GPA in Management.

Martyna Szpakowska received First Team All-GLIAC accolades in doubles this season along with Second Team honors in singles. She holds an impressive singles record of 24-3 while primarily playing at the fourth position. Her academic pursuit is Psychology, maintaining a GPA of 3.93.

Shanice Weekes has compiled a solid combined singles record at both No. 5 and No. 6 positions, alongside success in doubles matches throughout the year. As a Biological Sciences Honors major, she maintains a GPA of 3.85.

The WSU women's tennis team achieved notable success this season by securing both the GLIAC Regular-Season Championship and tournament title as well as an NCAA Regional title.
