Wayne State defeats GVSU with late-game homers

Wayne State University baseball team secured a 10-5 victory over Grand Valley State University in their series opener at Harwell Field. The Warriors improved their record to 24-13 overall and 13-6 in the GLIAC, while the Lakers now stand at 18-18 overall and 10-7 in conference play.

The game saw Wayne State take an early lead with Kyle Ray grounding out to bring CJ Maury home from third base. Grand Valley responded with a run on a wild pitch in the second inning and took the lead with a solo home run in the third.

Reagan Paulina contributed by singling Drew Hill home, followed by Logan Van Sicklen's sacrifice fly that scored Tony Hatzigeorgiou, giving Wayne State a 3-2 advantage. Hill further extended the lead with a two-run hit in the fourth inning.

Grand Valley closed the gap to one run again after scoring twice on a double in the fifth inning. However, Van Sicklen added another sacrifice fly to score Paulina, maintaining Wayne State's edge.

In the seventh inning, Jacoby Dale hit his first home run at Harwell Field as a Warrior, adding two runs to their tally. Van Sicklen followed suit with his own two-run homer in the eighth inning, marking his first at Harwell this season.

Karter Fitzpatrick earned his sixth win of the season after pitching seven innings, allowing five earned runs on nine hits while striking out nine batters. Macio Miller closed out the game with two shutout innings for his second save of the year.

The teams are set to face off again in a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.
