Wayne State University's women's basketball team faced a narrow defeat against Findlay University, concluding their 2024 season with a 56-59 loss. The match took place in Findlay, Ohio, on Saturday afternoon. Wayne State's current record stands at 6-4 overall and 1-1 in the GLIAC conference, while Findlay holds a 10-3 overall record and 3-1 in the G-MAC.
The game began with both teams struggling offensively until UF's Kate Ellis scored two free throws at the 8:41 mark. McKenna Ferguson quickly responded for Wayne State, leveling the score at 2-2. A scoring drought followed until Addisyn Freeman's three-pointer gave Findlay a lead they maintained throughout the first quarter, ending it at 14-7.
In the second quarter, Ferguson helped reduce the gap by scoring two three-pointers. Despite efforts from Taylor Thompson and Alyssa Leister to keep Wayne State competitive, Findlay managed to extend their lead before halftime.
Wayne State started strong in the third quarter with seven consecutive points, including Shea Tripp reaching her career milestone of over 1,000 points. The Warriors managed to maintain a lead until late in the third quarter when Findlay closed in on their advantage.
The fourth quarter saw Wayne State outscored as they struggled with shooting efficiency compared to Findlay's higher percentage from both field goals and free throws. This shift allowed Findlay to secure victory despite Wayne State's rebounding advantage.
Key performers for Wayne State included Taylor Thompson with a double-double of 19 points and 17 rebounds; McKenna Ferguson contributed 15 points; Alyssa Leister added another eleven points. For Findlay, Kate Ellis and Chloe Callahan each scored thirteen points.
