Wayne state women's basketball secures victory over lake superior state

Wayne State University's women's basketball team achieved a significant victory against Lake Superior State University, winning 75-48 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. This game marked the first win for Wayne State in the 2025 season.

In the opening quarter, Lake Superior State's Breah Golden scored first with a floater. Wayne State's McKenna Ferguson responded to put her team on the scoreboard. The teams exchanged leads until Shea Tripp's successful free throw tied the game at five points each. A subsequent lay-up by Ferguson gave Wayne State its first lead, and a strong scoring run closed the quarter with Wayne State ahead 22-11.

During the second quarter, Grace Bradford of Lake Superior hit a three-pointer for Lake Superior, narrowing Wayne State's lead to single digits. However, Ferguson and Taylor Thompson helped extend Wayne State's advantage to 29-14. Despite a long-range jumper from Golden for Lake Superior, they went scoreless for over six minutes while Wayne State scored 16 unanswered points. By halftime, Wayne State led 45-19 with Ferguson, Tripp, and Thompson all scoring in double digits.

The third quarter saw both teams trading baskets initially but ended with neither side scoring after Mackenzie Miller's lay-up for Wayne State at 2:39 left on the clock.

In the final quarter, Ally Shagena opened with her first three-pointer of the season for Wayne State. Both teams added another 14 points each as Wayne State secured their road victory.

Statistically, Wayne State shot 46.8% from the field and out-rebounded Lake Superior 46-30 while also leading in assists with 25 compared to Lake Superior’s 14.

Shea Tripp led Wayne State with a game-high of 21 points along with five assists and four steals. Taylor Thompson recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 16 points and a game-best of 13 rebounds. McKenna Ferguson contributed significantly as well with six out of eight successful shots resulting in 17 points.

For Lake Superior, Breah Golden was their top scorer with ten points while Grace Bradford contributed six rebounds and five assists.

Wayne State will continue their road trip facing Ferris State Bulldogs next on January 4th at Big Rapids, Michigan.
