Wayne State women's fencing team secures two victories at Schiller Duals

Evanston, Ill. -- The Wayne State University women's fencing team concluded their participation at the Schiller Duals with two victories. The event took place at the Ryan Fieldhouse on Northwestern University's campus.

Wayne State achieved wins against Wheaton College (20-2) and the University of Detroit Mercy (18-7). However, they faced defeats from several other universities including the University of California San Diego (22-5), The Ohio State University (22-5), Cornell University (21-6), Temple University (20-7), Stanford University (19-8), the Air Force Academy (18-9), and Denison University (19-8).

In foil competition, Noreen Bongado from Farmington Hills, Michigan, and Ludovica Mancini from Rome, Italy represented Wayne State. Mancini ended with a 14-10 record, notably achieving a 2-0 bout record against Detroit Mercy. Bongado finished with a 3-21 overall record, securing wins against Cornell and Denison.

Reka Galfalvy from Budapest was Wayne State's standout performer in epee, concluding with an 18-6 mark. She had perfect rounds against Temple, Stanford, and Air Force. Salma Abdrabou from Cairo recorded 16 wins to eight losses with notable performances against Ohio State and Stanford. Vika Shevchenko from Troy secured ten bout wins.

In sabre events, Reagan Byars from Warren and Mehreen Siddiqui from Canton combined for a 1-45 record; Byars claimed the only win in this category against the Air Force Academy.

The Wayne State women's fencing team will next host the Central Collegiate Fencing Conference Championships on February 22 at WSU Fieldhouse.
