Wayne State University's men's fencing team concluded their participation in the Schiller Duals at Northwestern University, held over two days at Ryan Fieldhouse. The Warriors secured victories against Wheaton College and the University of Detroit Mercy but faced defeats from several other universities.
On the first day, Wayne State triumphed over Wheaton College with a score of 20-6. However, they were defeated by the University of California San Diego (22-5), the University of Notre Dame (21-6), The Ohio State University (22-5), and Stanford University (21-6).
The second day saw further challenges for Wayne State as they lost to both the Air Force Academy (17-10) and the University of Incarnate Word (20-7). They concluded their participation with a win against the University of Detroit Mercy, scoring 16-9.
In foil competition, five athletes represented Wayne State: Sam Gneuhs, Ethan Leung, Mitchell Gatrell, Carlos Santos, and Bobbie Hirsch. Gneuhs achieved a 5-12 record overall, while Leung finished with a 4-13 record. Gatrell managed a 2-10 record. Hirsch ended with one win out of three bouts on day one but did not secure any wins on day two. Santos won two out of three bouts on day one but did not compete on day two.
In epee events, Shuayb Dinkins recorded six wins on Saturday and added five more victories on Sunday. Bryce Heim collected four wins on the first day and finished with a total record of 6-14. Lance Miller had one victory against Notre Dame. Gatrell also competed in epee matches alongside his foil events.
For sabre competitions, Zeyad Nofal achieved an 11-6 bout record across both days. Brendan Goeddeke completed his first day's matches with a 3-11 record and finished with an overall tally of 5-18.
The Wayne State men's fencing team is set to host the Central Collegiate Fencing Conference Championship at WSU Fieldhouse on February 22.
