The Wayne State University men's basketball team secured a comeback victory against Saginaw Valley State University on Thursday evening. Trailing by nine points at halftime, Wayne State rallied to win 81-69, improving their overall record to 12-11 and their conference record to 8-7.
In the first half, Saginaw Valley State took an early lead with an 8-0 run before Wayne State's Kelvin Tamakloe scored. Despite efforts from Ray Williams, Jr., Rob Lee, Jr., and others, SVSU maintained a lead of up to 19-6. A lay-up by Tamario Adley and contributions from Adam Ayrault and Carmelo Harris helped reduce the deficit, but SVSU led 41-32 at the break.
Wayne State started strong in the second half with six consecutive points. Although SVSU briefly held onto a five-point advantage, Harris' three-pointer tied the game at 48-48. Carlos Paul III gave Wayne State its first lead with a score of 53-52 midway through the half. The game remained tight until Wayne State pulled ahead for good during a scoring drought for SVSU that lasted over six minutes.
Rob Lee, Jr. led Wayne State with 26 points and nine rebounds. Carmelo Harris added 21 points while Tamario Adley contributed nine points and nine rebounds. Carlos Paul III scored 11 points.
For Saginaw Valley State, Toodles Seal was the top scorer with 20 points. Triston Nichols provided support off the bench with 11 points.
Wayne State will next face Roosevelt in Chicago on Monday evening as they continue their season.
