Wayne State women’s fencing team competes at CCFC Championships

The Wayne State University women's fencing team concluded their participation in the Central Collegiate Fencing Conference (CCFC) Championships on Sunday. The event's second day featured individual bouts.

Sophomore Reka Galfalvy from Budapest, Hungary, secured a second-place finish in the epee category.

In the first round of pool play for epee, Vika Shevchenko from Troy, Michigan, Salma Abdrabou from Cairo, Egypt, and Galfalvy represented Wayne State. Both Abdrabou and Galfalvy advanced to the second round with a 5-1 bout record. Abdrabou had a +14 touch differential while Galfalvy recorded +11. Shevchenko did not advance after finishing with a 2-4 record and a -9 touch differential.

During the second round, Galfalvy achieved a 3-3 record with a +3 touch differential, placing her eighth for direct elimination. Abdrabou also went 3-3 but had a -3 touch differential, ranking her as No. 15.

In direct elimination rounds, Galfalvy defeated top-ranked Amanda Pirkowski of Northwestern University with a score of 15-13 in the table of eight. She continued to excel by overcoming Christina Liu from Northwestern University 15-11 in the semi-final bout. In the finals against Gloria Klughardt of The Ohio State University, she tied at 14 touches each but could not secure the final point, finishing second overall in women's epee.

For foil competitions, Noreen Bongado from Farmington Hills and Ludovica Mancini from Rome participated for Wayne State. Mancini finished tenth after achieving a +3 touch differential and going 3-3 in round one; she compiled a 2-3 record with a +5 touch differential in round two. Bongado placed 23rd overall with a -20 touch differential and an overall bout record of 1-5.

In sabre events, Reagan Byars from Warren ended up in 25th place with an 0-5 bout record and -19 touch differential. Mehreen Siddiqui from Canton finished just behind Byars at position 26th after going winless at 0-6 with -26 in touch differentials.
