Wayne State University's softball team played two games on Wednesday at the NTC Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. The team achieved a split result with a win against Winona State University and a loss to Shepherd University.

In the first game, Wayne State defeated Winona State 3-0. Junior pitcher Hayden Batton from Plainfield, Indiana, recorded her first career shutout. "Batton (1-2) notched her first win since garnering the victory in a 7-6 triumph at Northwood on April 20, 2023," according to the team's report. Freshman Hunter Near contributed to the score with a solo home run in the sixth inning.

The second game saw Wayne State fall to Shepherd University with a score of 7-4. The Warriors initially led but were overtaken by Shepherd's five-run fifth inning. "Shepherd added five runs in the top of the fifth on five hits," noted the release.

Key players for Wayne State included Morgan Williams and Katelyn DeWitt, both contributing significantly across both games. On Shepherd's side, Madelyn Chambers stood out with two hits and two runs scored.

Wayne State will take a break on Thursday before facing Hillsdale and Slippery Rock on Friday morning.
