Wayne State men’s swim team finishes strong at nationals

Wayne State University's men's swimming and diving team concluded their participation in the national championships with a total of 142.5 points, securing 12th place overall. The final day saw the team adding 57 points to their tally.

Freshman William Debroux from Oro-Medonte, Ontario, achieved seventh place in the men's 1650 free with a time of 15:22.31. Graduate student Trevor Jones from Farmington, Michigan, completed his race during preliminaries and finished 19th overall.

Gabriel Arias from Bogota, Colombia, set a new school record in the consolation finals of his event with a time of 1:44.35, surpassing the previous record set by Dima Drobnych in 2019.

The diving events proved significant for Wayne State's team standings. Senior Julio Osuna from Tijuana, Mexico, and sophomore Max Wasiniak from Huron, Ohio, secured second and fifth places respectively in the one-meter diving finals. Osuna's score of 602.00 broke the previous school record held since 1982 by Hall of Fame diver Don Mason.

Sophomore John Martin from Brownstown, Michigan, participated in the consolation finals and placed 14th with a score of 432.00. The combined efforts of these divers contributed significantly to Wayne State's overall score.

In the concluding event of the championships, Wayne State's men's 400 free relay team finished in 15th place with a time of 2:57.13. The relay team included freshman Tomas Osorio from Medellín, Colombia; freshman Olin Charnstrom from Oxford, Michigan; graduate student Trevor Jones; and senior Clayton Kinnard from Dexter, Michigan.

The top teams at this year's NCAA Championships were Drury with 525 points followed by Tampa and McKendree with scores of 451 and 349 respectively.

A total of 36 schools scored at this year's men's NCAA Championships.
