The Wayne State University women's golf team secured a sixth-place finish at the 2025 NCAA East Regional, held in Allendale, Michigan. The team was three strokes short of qualifying for the NCAA Finals. Despite this, Ting-Yu Kuo from Taipei advanced to the finals as an individual after tying for third place.
"I'm super proud of this group," stated head coach Larry Hamilton. "The whole day, the scores went back and forth and in the end, we came up just shy of getting to nationals. We beat a lot of teams ranked ahead of us and that always feels good. Ting Ting played incredible, especially today in round three. She stayed patient and when the putter got hot, it got really hot. Seven birdies on that course with those pins was really special."
Kuo achieved a three-day total score of 220 (+4), shooting a remarkable 69 on Wednesday. This was the only round in the 60s by any player during the tournament or by a Warrior this season. Her performance elevated her from tenth to third place.
Other notable performances from Wayne State included Sophia Wygonik tying for 29th with a score of 236 (+20) and Sabel Imesch finishing tied for 42nd with a score of 239 (+23). Claudia Portillo and Orianna Bylsma also contributed to the team's overall performance.
Lisa Marie Schumacher from Tiffin will join Kuo at the finals as another individual not part of a top-five team. Schumacher finished fifth with a score of 221 (+5).
The top five teams advancing were Grand Valley State, Findlay, Ferris State, UIndy, and Missouri-St. Louis.
The NCAA Finals are scheduled for May 13-17 at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nevada. There, all qualifying teams and individuals will compete over three days to determine champions.
