Wayne State University men's tennis program has announced the addition of three new athletes to its 2025-26 roster. Head coach Bryan Morrow, who is entering his 18th season with the Warriors, confirmed that two freshmen and one transfer will join the team.
The incoming players are Warren Gunnar from Ypsilanti, Michigan; Thomas Mathys from Grimisuat, Switzerland; and Harry Forsyth, a transfer student from Mississippi College originally from Wamberal, New South Wales, Australia.
Gunnar graduated in 2025 from Ann Arbor Huron High School. He was a four-year varsity letterwinner under coach Bob Denham and contributed to his team’s three consecutive top-11 finishes at the MHSAA Division 1 state tournament. Gunnar earned All-Southeastern Conference honors for three years and was named First Team All-State as both a junior and senior. He won the state championship at No. 3 doubles in 2022, finished as a finalist at first doubles in 2023, and reached the quarterfinals at No. 1 singles in 2024. Gunnar served as team captain for two seasons and received academic honors all four years of high school.
Coach Morrow commented on Gunnar's addition: "Gunnar played at Ann Arbor Huron and is a very athletic kid that I have been able to watch play in high school for a number of years. He has experience in both singles and doubles competition, hits the ball well, and is very technically sound. We are very excited to see how he will grow within our program and we know how excited he is to join the squad. Warren will be a really nice addition to the team as an individual and as a teammate."
Mathys completed his education at ECCG (School of Commerce and General Culture) in Martigny, Switzerland, graduating in 2025. Over the last two seasons, he has competed in qualifying draws on the ITF World Tennis Tour.
On Mathys joining Wayne State, Coach Morrow said: "Thomas is a very strong lefty that appears nationally ranked in Switzerland. He has a very aggressive game that we are eager to see in his freshman season and we are excited to watch him grow. Mathys plays a style of tennis that should make the transition to the collegiate level a smooth one. In addition, he has an incredible work ethic that makes us even more excited to get him on campus."
Forsyth attended Mississippi College during spring 2025 but did not compete after being redshirted. He previously graduated from The McDonald College where he played for Voyager Academy. Forsyth was named Australian Schoolboys Champion in 2024, secured victory for his team in the Pizzie Cup Team event by clinching the deciding match, and advanced to the finals of the J30 ITF Lautoka (Fiji) International Junior Championships after winning seven straight matches.
Coach Morrow spoke about Forsyth's potential: "Harry is from Australia and attended Mississippi College for one semester and will be joining the team as a transfer. He plays a big game and has won some high level tournaments in Australia and brings some experience from being at a different school. Harry, similar to Thomas, has incredible upside. We believe that he has the ability to become a very special player for us and he is a very comfortable doubles player."
Discussing this recruiting class overall, Coach Morrow stated: "I don't know if I could be more excited. We have had some good recruiting classes in the past. We have three guys who are all thrilled to be a part of Wayne State and become Warriors. As far as tennis wise and talent wise, they all add to what we already have and will make our team deeper and more competitive. With the addition of these three, we will have 10 student-athletes who will all be able to compete for playing time, which will be a very good thing. These guys are all hungry to compete and prove themselves as collegiate tennis players."
