The Wayne State University women's volleyball team began its participation in the Wildcat Classic with a 3-1 loss to Dallas Baptist University on Friday afternoon in Amherst, New York. The match marked Wayne State's first defeat of the season, bringing their overall record to 4-1. Dallas Baptist, which reached the NCAA Tournament Round of 32 in 2024, improved to 3-1.
Wayne State recorded a hitting percentage of .103 for the match, tallying 51 kills and committing 33 errors on 174 total attacks. Dallas Baptist posted a slightly higher hitting percentage at .131 with 45 kills and 24 errors from 160 attempts. The Warriors' most efficient set came in the opener with a .205 mark but declined in subsequent sets.
Kayla Giroux led Wayne State with 13 kills, while Paige Giehtbrock added 11. Giehtbrock also achieved her first double-double as a Warrior by contributing 15 digs. Kayla Dulgar registered 38 assists, and Kendyl Andrews delivered four service aces, just one shy of her career high.
On defense, Wayne State totaled ten blocks—one solo and eighteen assisted—with five players collecting two or more block assists: Giroux (seven), Leigha Baldwin (five), Giehtbrock (two), Katerina Stout (two), and Amelia Klos (one solo, one assist). Andrews led all players with 24 digs, four short of her personal best; both Giehtbrock and Abby Macalaguim also reached double digits in digs with fifteen and twelve respectively.
The Warriors will continue play at the Wildcat Classic on Saturday with matches scheduled against Clarion at 10 a.m. and host Daemen College at 6:30 p.m.
