Wayne State University's football team was defeated 7-3 by the University of Findlay in a defensive contest on Saturday. The game marked the first time since October 2021 that Wayne State held an opponent to fewer than 10 points, but the Warriors' offense struggled to capitalize.
The Oilers scored the game's only touchdown in the second quarter after a six-play, 90-yard drive. Christian Davis completed the series with a 16-yard run around the left end. Wayne State's only points came from a 23-yard field goal by sophomore Griffin Nowak in the fourth quarter.
Wayne State had opportunities late in the game, advancing to Findlay's two-yard line before settling for a field goal and later reaching the Oilers' 23-yard line. However, an interception by Adonai Bumba ended their final drive.
Edwards led Wayne State's offense, completing 19 of 29 passes for a career-high 183 yards with one interception. XaVior Tyus rushed for a game-best 30 yards on seven attempts. Drew Hickmott and Justyz Tuggle each recorded five receptions, with Hickmott totaling a team-high 78 receiving yards.
On defense, Martell Williams registered eight tackles while Will Fennema contributed three-and-a-half tackles for loss and one-and-a-half sacks. Punter Dove Eitzen averaged nearly 39 yards per punt with two inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.
Findlay quarterback Chase Harrison threw for 172 yards with one interception. Bryan Hunt led all receivers with eight catches for 92 yards.
Both teams found little success on third down conversions; Wayne State went four-for-11 while Findlay converted three-of-13 attempts. Time of possession slightly favored Findlay at just over thirty-two minutes.
Wayne State will next travel to Wisconsin for its first visit to that state since November of 1972.
