The Wayne State University women's golf team began its 2025-26 season with a seventh-place finish at the Champions of Women's Golf Classic, hosted by Ohio Dominican in Columbus, Ohio. The Warriors competed against 15 teams and posted identical scores of 317 (+37) in both rounds for a total of 634, which was six strokes away from the top five.
Claudia Portillo led Wayne State with a second-place individual finish, ending just two shots behind the tournament leader. Portillo shot a combined score of 148 (+8), recording a 75 on Saturday and improving to a 73 in the second round. This marks her fourth career top-five finish and her seventh time placing in the top ten out of eleven career events.
Other contributors for Wayne State included Ting-Yu Kuo, who tied for 19th place at +17 (157), Clara Laffitte tied for 37th at +24 (164), Sonia Bayahya tied for 43rd at +27 (167), and Orianna Bylsma finished tied for 59th at +30 (170).
Tiffin University won the event with a total score of 608 (+48). Ashland finished second with 611 (+51), followed by Charleston in third with 624 (+64). Wayne State's final tally put them ahead of Ohio Dominican, Northwood, and Malone among others.
Wayne State will next host its own Warrior Invitational on September 22-23 at Orchards Golf Club in Washington, Michigan. The upcoming event will feature two rounds over two days.
